Always. Pike teeth cut through mono and fluorocarbon — use a minimum 28lb wire (or titanium) trace for lures and deadbaits, every time.

Match the rod to your lures: a 20–60g rod covers most Irish lure fishing; step up to 40–100g+ for big baits. We stock Savage Gear, Abu Garcia and Fox Rage in store to try for size.

Long forceps or pliers, side cutters, a proper unhooking mat and a large landing net are essentials for pike care. Our unhooking mat guide in the Journal covers the details.

The colder months — October to March — are prime, when pike feed hard and fight at their best. Dawn and dusk produce all year.
